Jaite Company Paper Mill Machine Shops

Machine Shops

To maintain the equipment at Jaite, most notably the fourdrinier line, several machine shops were located around the mill. While typical of such areas found in all industrial facilities, they are of particular note due to the fact that here, unlike in other rooms, the tools and mechanisms are all "human scale," and unlike a photo of a huge rotary mixer, one can clearly imagine the workers who stood at a lathe, or operated a welding torch, or dropped a pair of safety goggles on the floor.

The image to the left is the main power switch for the east machine shop, built in 1905, formerly the power house. Most of the photographs below were taken in this room.
